Areas of Need

Canine Companions for Independence®

Baylor Scott & White Health has joined forces with Canine Companions for Independence®, a leader in the training of assistance dogs, to bring a premier service animal training center to North Texas.

The new, philanthropically supported campus will be used to train assistance dogs for placement, free of charge, with people with a broad range of developmental or physical disabilities. People like U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Brian Boone, who was injured while serving his country.

During his service in Afghanistan, an IED severed Brian's left leg and damaged nerves in both of his shoulders. Months of rehabilitation and physical therapy helped him regain some strength. Brian hopes that working with his Canine Companions teammate, Brindle, will make him even stronger.

Not only is Brindle making a difference in Brian’s life, his calming presence has a ripple effect throughout the entire Boone family. Brian says he is most thankful for the impact this amazing dog has had on bringing his 7-year-old autistic son, Griffen, out of his shell.

"Brindle has been such a blessing, not just for me, but for my son and my family," said Brian. "He has truly changed our lives and I am forever thankful."
