Arts in Medicine
The Arts in Medicine program integrates music and the performing arts to promote healing and enhance the lives of our patients, their families, visitors and caregivers.
Healing through the arts
The Arts in Medicine program at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center integrates music and the performing arts to promote healing and enhance the lives of our patients, their families, visitors and caregivers. It also builds on community partnerships around the arts, health and medicine.
As these services are provided at no cost to patients and are not billable services, philanthropic support has enabled us to create and sustain this program.
Music Therapy
Music Therapy uses research-based music interventions to support social, emotional, physical, cognitive and sensory needs. Like occupational and physical therapists, music therapists set up unique therapeutic goals for each patient and may see a patient regularly until a goal is reached. In addition to playing music for a patient, a music therapist may also sing, facilitate a patient to play music, or work with a patient to write music or songs. Music therapists must have completed either a bachelor’s or master’s degree in music therapy and have a music therapist (MT-BC) certification.
In the hospital, music therapy can be used to:
- Reduce pain, anxiety and stress
- Promote relaxation, sedate or induce sleep
- Improve mood
- Encourage active and positive participation in treatment
- Provide family support and interaction
- Provide end-of-life support
Our two music therapists provided 998 sessions to patients and their families last year.
Artists-in-Residence
Made possible by philanthropic funding, Artists-in-Residence offer musical performances in common areas around the Baylor Scott & White All Saints campus. This program integrates professional artists into the healthcare setting to promote the general well-being, distraction and stress-reduction for patients, families, visitors and clinical and support staff. Our Artists-in-Residence performed for over 300 hours in common areas of All Saints last year.
Your support
You can help bring comfort and healing to patients, caregivers and visitors by supporting the Arts in Medicine program. From promoting weight gain and neurological development in the neonatal intensive care unit to reducing stress and discomfort in other areas of the hospital, the Arts in Medicine Program plays a vital role in holistic care. Funded 100% by philanthropy, the program can continue and grow its impact through your support.
